We met Dave first in Houghton and by a twist of fate
in Rochester Dave bumped into Dawn our first day there.
The apartments Dawn and I rented discovered who we were
every light, door, shadow was a wonder to observe.
Jobs were scarce for us recently graduated
we shared economy with soy bean pie when it came to that.
Vacuum pot coffees were affordable after a dollar movie at RIT
brunch on Sundays was profligate with newspaper & eggs
Cindy Penne performed on violin
Dave played new phrases on acoustic guitar
Bob rehearsed short sermons
Kendall recited poems and
our Wilcox Street neighbor sang mornings in the sun.
Now when Dave and I get together for yet another
Independence Day in Boston
First Night Grand Procession
Thanksgiving or Christmas with spouses and kids
we have so many in our course of years
we hug with the past unimaginably certain
and though the future is airy
before that we have had all of this.
