Twice Told Tales

Liehne and I paused before crossing Meigs
the last in a row of cars was in front of us
I whispered okay or signaled with a nod
too quick too quick
she went under the rear wheel and ran into the night.
Suffering with regret and looking for her hopelessly
I went home to ask for help and
when we found her
she was blind in one eye.
Blind in one eye she and I were paused at the Village Green Bookstore
looking at the window display
a passer-by startled her
she yelped and shied away
embarrassed I scolded her and yanked hard on the leash.
