Ingonish Campground along an access road 
a quail and her daughters were behind a tree.
Menace was lurking as the mother stretched her neck
thin to peer
as mothers do in these situations
she stepped across as fast as possible.
A daughter copied the caution by stretching her neck 
then dashed across the road into wildflower cover.
Worse alone than in danger
the other daughter ran to her mother and sister.
