Twice Told Tales

In Roslindale for example
a professional neighborhood with blue-collar density
a two-family with a postage-stamp yard
front steps are painted light grey.
And with reverence a statue of Mary.
Grey paint smooths cement
is easier to clean and trims a border
for daisies in the six-foot garden.
West from Kamloops
the Fraser River cuts through the canyon
trains whistle around the bend
in tunnels along the ledge
cars and trucks carried hard rain inside
spinning blurring kaleidoscopes
splatter whirled up into the closed face-shield.
I wondered then what slippery fool painted
the surface of the tunnel light grey.
