Twice Told Tales

On Grand Manan and its basalt fifty-foot cliffs
heath and moorland summer hikes
a wild beauty abandoned decades ago
we stayed at Castalia Marsh.
In the seclusion of Bird House Cabin
at the fringe of the woods at the edge of the marsh
seagrass and wildflowers
mosquitoes bumblebees and spiders
Hawks and ospreys took turns atop a dead-wood tree.
At the meadow's edge with rolling ocean fog
eagles large as soldiers stood
sunrise gleaming on their wings.
