Fourth graders volunteered as school crossing guards
before crossing the street children waited
red-flag poles stopped the cars
the poles lived inside the school's front doors 
each was assigned to an operator
a morning and afternoon school crossing guard
after the children were gone for the day
the poles regrouped with their kind each night
the red flags bunched together in a corner
the fabric of a public school flower.
