an hour off the ferry on Route 203
a deer floated through the air 
I accelerated as it sailed in slow motion 
a few inches behind the bike.

the deer leaped from the road's shoulder
it hit at less than 10 miles per hour
the bike sprawled 
I climbed up
cars emptied asking if I’m okay
yes with nerves jangled.
