Twice Told Tales

Rich memories of adventuring young love
exaggerations are 35 years old
we arrived for the Brawl in Montreal with no French
(we knew highway signage Est and Ouest)
I sold my coat for tickets
(I offered but no one bought)
among the greatest fights of all time
(hence it was eclipsed)
I emptied our savings account
(about 20 bucks)
we drove from Rochester believing
radio news of cheap seats remaining
Sugar Ray Leonard Roberto Duran
welterweight championship bout.
We shared a hot dog plate during preliminaries
Sugar Ray fought a macho toe-to-toe fight
Duran won
we drove home that night.
The next day
I worked a job that pays same-day
we ate out that night to celebrate
(or bought supper from the grocery store).
