Twice Told Tales

The surface of snow-blower snow is smooth like paint
shovel-thrown has peaks like ocean billows break.
With daily variations around the neighborhood
the meld of blown and shoveled snow
recreates The Great Wave Off Kanagawa in alternate shapes.
In deeply-covered yards
tinted with blues and greens of North Atlantic afternoon
the bulging swells as of undulating seas
and road-salt crags of shoveled snow
are impervious to mid-day melt.
Hokusai‘s ocean is outside my window and
like the Great Wave canvas
winter here has fixed into view.
