Twice Told Tales

90 when he passed away John Ashbery was
brutally imitated in amateur poetry
a flood of word sounds up and over a river bank
gurgling into a prairie rabbit hole and out the other end into a river bed
which hasn’t been imagined yet
which isn’t intended to say
he isn’t also the liberator of verse
along the wash of us who thought we could.
