I ran slowly yesterday
more slowly along the way
nearing the finish of the neighborhood route
a couple none too young caught up and walked past
a block later I couldn’t stand up
dizzy and lurching I leaned over for stability and
fell backwards in the street
a passerby carefully said:
Hello?
I tried to ward off concern:
I wanted to keep running until home
and this is where I live
she looked at me as if I might not know.
