Girls and boys flew to school
through the air they went holding the cable and books
now they’re all seventy
their joints are stiff
they tell how surprising that is
but in 1959 they flew
the bridge was out
it sank below the surface
or it slid along and broke as it went down
the girls wore book bags over their shoulders
they gripped the cable as it pulled over the river
the boys did too
mid-century after the war in Guiglia Italy
like doves of learning they flew.
