Poems are funny things
I don’t mean good for telling jokes
or dogs dressed with antlers like a deer
poems are preposterous because
as William Stafford said anyone can write them
sure you can write them but afterwards they're curious
walking wobbly around the yard as if it’s night in day
feet darkened by leaves holding yesterday’s rain
try writing a couple poems
you’ll understand what I mean
poems go off resisting the rub and scratch they had.
