Twice Told Tales

In our neighborhood, trees on the sidewalk berm
share city space with telephone poles.
Limbs caught touching a wire get sawed off.
Divided imbalanced reshaped
the trees adapt as well as can be hoped but
their deformities arrest passersby.
A Norway Maple on our block serves as a case in point
with one leg on each side of the chord
after a hundred years
the limbs are cartoonishly far apart.
