My wife is a garden feminist in the neighborhood
men drive landscaping trucks
mulch circles around trees
poison weeds and sprinkle the grass.
Our yard has dandelions, clover and mowed natural cover
there’s a Hosta bed along the fence where Lilies grow
last year’s Hydrangea was relocated behind the Cucumber Magnolia
behind that the Korean Viburnum is flowering.
On the house south wall Miss Bateman is on a trellis
clay pots on the stone porch grow kitchen herbs and Geraniums.
Alyssum and Thyme are in the front porch pots.
Giant Hostas and a Japanese Spikenard in bright light green
lie in the shade of the Weeping Cherry and Dogwood tree.
In the north side bed are Smokebush and Ninebark shurbs
annuals and perennials are mixed on the border.
The back fence is fronted with Heuchera
their leaves, widely spaced, anticipate new growth, and ask her sometime
would she like a ring of mulch 'round the Mulberry tree.
